Some of the best days away are not weekends. They are a morning train, a city you can walk, and a return you have already chosen. You need a place where the station is part of the centre, not an hour from it.
Pick the shape of the day
Leave after breakfast, arrive late morning, and give yourself a loop: the river or the main street, one indoor stop if the weather turns, and one meal you sit down for. Then the train home. Two museums and a viewpoint is a different day, the kind that ends with you running. One good walk and one good lunch is enough to feel you went somewhere.
The practical bit
Check the last train you are willing to be on, and the one before it. Advance tickets are fine if you will make that departure. If you might linger, buy the flexibility. Screenshot the ticket. Wear the shoes you would wear at home for errands, not the ones you save for occasions. A day between trains is still a lot of pavement.
How it should feel
You should get home the same day slightly tired, with one thing you noticed and nowhere you failed to tick off. That is the point of a city break that fits inside a Tuesday or a Saturday. The overnight bag can wait for a town that deserves it.
